05. HOW MODERNIST ARCHITECTURE SHAPES OUR JEWELLERY

Growing up in Brussels, we were surrounded by a mix of classic and Modernist buildings that subtly shaped our sense of design. From the Atomium to the Flagey building, the city offers a quiet blend of bold simplicity and lasting beauty. It’s the kind of place where you might not even notice how much the architecture is influencing you—until one day, you realize it’s shaped your whole aesthetic…

THE BIRTH OF MODERNIST ARCHITECTURE

Modernist architecture emerged in the early 20th century with one clear goal: to strip away the unnecessary and focus on simplicity. It was all about function, clean lines, and embraced the possibilities of new materials like steel, concrete, glass.

Visionaries like Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Walter Gropius reimagined the way we inhabit space. "A house is a machine for living in", Le Corbusier proclaimed a manifesto for architecture stripped to its essence. Is wasn't about decoration. It was about proportion. Structure. Purpose.

Modernism wasn't just a style. It was a philosophy. And from Bauhaus studios to postwar skykines, it redefined what beauty could be. Born in Europe, Modernism changed everything, influencing how cities were built and how we experience design today.

SPOTTING A MODERNIST BUILDING ?

So, what makes a building “Modernist”? Look for clarity. For repetition. For sillence. in the details. Modernist buildings are composed of pure forms: flat roofs, open interiors, large horizontal windows, and geometric volumes that create a sens of weightless space. In contrast to the opulent, decorative elements of Art Deco, which celebrated luxury with rich materials like marble and gold, Modernism embraced simplicity and function with industrial materials such as steel, concrete, and glass.

Think of iconic structures like Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye or Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion, where beauty is achieved through clarity and purpose. As Mies van der Rohe famously put it, "Less is more."

MODERNISM IN OUR JEWELLERY

At daŭre, we’ve distilled the essence of Modernist architecture into our jewellery by starting with pure geometric forms. Clean lines, bold shapes, and a focus on simplicity define our approach. We wanted to create pieces that not only make a statement but also feel comfortable enough to wear every day.

"Clean lines, bold shapes, and a focus on simplicity define our approach"
